Abstract: The main chemical and mineral compositions of steel slag and its effect on the flowability of fresh concrete and the strength and durability of hardened concrete were summarized. With a low content of steel slag and the constant water consumption, the addition a certain amount of steel slag can improve the concrete flowability. The early compressive strength of the concrete is decreased while the 28 day compressive strength is close to that of the reference concrete. The proper steel slag addition will reduce the early dry shrinkage, improve the anti-carbonization of the concrete at later ages and increase the concrete resistance to chloride permeability. With the comparative air content and steel slag content, concrete frost resistance is close to that of the reference concrete, however, the bigger steel slag content reduces the concrete frost resistance.
